2014/2015

The government has provided our school with £8631 of additional funding for the academic year 2014 - 2015 to improve the provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport. This funding has been provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in our school.

Our allocation for Sport Premium is £8631

This expenditure will focus upon the implementation of a specialist Physical Education teacher, Mrs Emma Wells

The main aims of employing Mrs Wells were:

  1. To provide existing staff with training and resources to help them teach PE more effectively therefore increasing confidence, knowledge and skills in all staff.
  2. Increase participation in competitive sport and participation in the Cornwall School Games
  3. Introduce new sports and encourage more pupils to take up sport especially the least active children.

What we achieved 2014 – 15

Aim 1

  • All staff were able to watch and team teach units of work based on gymnastics, dance, games and athletics. Staff were provided with and shown how to use relevant resources. An assessment package was introduced and staff alongside Mrs Wells assessed pupils in each of the above areas of the curriculum.
  • A dance teacher, Emily Wilkins, came and worked alongside class 4 and 5 and that was cascaded down to the other staff by Mrs Wells
  • Football leaders from Treviglas Community College (linking with our local secondary school) came into class 2 to help with delivery of football.
  • A system to track the progress of groups of pupils and identify pupils in need of targeted intervention and more able provision
  • Mrs Wells was able to access a number of courses which resulted in resources:
  1. KS1 Bupa Start to move course, all relevant information was then cascaded down to the rest of the staff through subsequent lessons.
  2. KS1 Skills to Play – this also came with a huge bag of resources (£500) which has enhanced the infants PE significantly. Again skills were delivered to staff through lesson
  3. LTA primary tennis and inclusion tennis – 2 bags of rackets, nets, balls and other fantastic resources.

Aim 2

  • Membership to the Newquay Sports Partnership which will allow us to participate in festivals, tournaments, inter school competitions and the Cornwall School Games.
  • We took part in all cluster festivals and tournaments within the Newquay Sports Partnership. We achieved the following;
    1. Won the Newquay schools High 5 Netball tournament
    2. Won the Newquay large schools Netball league.
    3. Won the Newquay Schools Basketball and went on to represent mid Cornwall and the Cornwall School Games.
    4. Won the Newquay large Schools Football League.
    5. Top 4 Rugby team in the Newquay Schools Rugby and went through to the CVOC Rugby finals.
    6. Won the Newquay round of Indoor Athletics and went on to compete in the county competition – finished 4th in the county.
    7. Entered teams in the Martial arts festival.
    8. Entered teams in the rowing festival
    9. Swim teams made it to the Cornwall School Games

Over 30 children competed in Y4, 5 and 6 cross county races. Friendly football matches have been arranged with Perranporth for both boys and girls. We also have entered surf competitions.

Aim 3

  • A year 1 and 2 multi skills club was set up and run by Mrs Wells as a result of the skills to play course. 32 children have attended throughout the year.
  • A football club was set up and run by Treviglas sports leaders for Year 1 and 2 over 30 children attended.
  • All children were given an activity diary to fill out based on a typical week. From that information a new club was set up for the least active. Over 20 children attended over 8 weeks.
  • Children have been able to attend surf taster days, martial arts festivals and sportability festivals.
  • New sports were introduced into the school. Children have had a chance to try indoor curling and archery.  
  • A fun fit club was set up for a number of selected children. 8 children attended these sessions.
  • The school bought into a resource called 5 – a – day which allowed all staff to provide 5 minutes of activity in their classrooms every morning and afternoon. Mrs wells delivered this to the whole staff at a staff meeting

Pupil progress and age related expectation

Pupil assessments will be completed at the beginning and end of each unit of work. Units of work take place every half term. At the end of the academic year an overall assessment is completed for each pupil, indicating whether they are working towards, working at or working beyond age expectation.  These assessments are shared with parents in learning journals.

Our target for the end of the 2014-2015 academic year is that 90% of all groups of children will be achieving or surpassing age related expectation.

At the end of the 2014-2015 academic year our PE assessments tells us that:

Pupil participation in physical education and sporting activity

The school is committed to supporting every child to be physically active. All pupils participate in high quality, timetabled physical education.

We use activity diaries which encourage pupils to be active outside of timetabled physical education. This can include attendance at after school clubs. We monitor the dairies and record the percentages of children participating in 6, 4 or 2 hours of physical activity outside of timetabled physical education per week.

The table below indicates the percentages of pupils participating in 6, 4 or 2 hours of physical activity during the Spring term:

Staff  have identified target groups of pupils that are deemed less active and physical activity sessions will be organised during the Summer term to encourage positive attitudes towards healthy and active lifestyles.
