Outdoor Learning

At Goonhavern Primary School Nursery we value the outdoors as an essential part of our learning environment and as a result spend time outside every-day, no matter what the weather!  We are very lucky to have access to the schools extensive grounds, gardens and pond.

Research shows that time spent outdoors can have huge benefits to a child’s health, well-being and learning. As a setting, we fully support this and aim to spend up to 80% of our day playing and learning in our wonderful outdoor space. We also have a lovely indoor space, whether it be for story times, snack, jigsaws, play dough or simply to come in and get warm and dry after playing in the rain.

Our days will are filled with activities and play that is led by the children’s innate curiosity. Our outdoor approach to learning allows the children to manage their own risks and challenges, supported by professional early years practitioners who will enhance their learning opportunities.

With all of this in mind, your child will need:

  • named wellington boots
  • a water-proof suit for summer
  • a cosy water-proof suit for winter
  • a scarf and gloves for winter
  • a hat for sunny days

There is no need to send your child with sun cream as we will provide this.

What do we get up to outside

Wood work (with real tools!), risky play, messy play, fireside singing, art with nature, clay modelling, creative modelling, outdoor cooking, sand/water play, mud kitchen cooking, den building, bird watching, dancing, music sessions, climbing, building, yoga and much more!
