PE Partnerships
To enhance our pupils' PE experiences, we work with a wide variety of partners, ensuring pupils get the highest quality physical education possible.
Perranporth Surf School: Our staff work alongside surf instructors from Perranporth Surf School to teach all pupils in Year 4 how to surf. We know that because of these lessons, more children access surfing outside of school and therefore engage in more high-quality physical exercise. We also offer surf lessons to support particular children who are less physically active than their peers and to pupils who would benefit from improving their resilience. In addition, pupils in Year 5 and 6 can choose to continue to develop their surf skills by taking part in an extracurricular club that runs each summer.
Cornish Pirates: Each year, pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 work with Sam Teasdale from the Cornish Pirates to develop rugby skills and sportsmanship skills. Children also participate in a competitive tournament with other schools in the Truro cluster.
Equation Fitness: Pupils in Key Stage 2 enjoy weekly fitness lessons at Equation gym in Goonhavern. Children (and staff!) work up at sweat and challenge themselves to continually improve week-on-week. We created this link as we wanted pupils to access high quality exercise and to feel comfortable in their local gym. We think that by becoming familiar with the gym and working with the instructors, children will be more likely to join the gym later on in life. A number of our pupils now attend the gym outside of school as a result of the sessions.
Dance Trio: Newquay’s Dance Trio teach dance lessons to all ages of children as an after-school club. A number of our children also attend their dance classes on weekends. Each summer, pupils from Dance Trio perform on stage as part of Goonhavern’s Got Talent! More experienced dancers also showcase their dancing to inspire future dancers.
Newquay Waterworld: As a fully qualified swimming instructor, Miss Dawe leads the school’s swimming lessons which are held at Newquay Waterworld. She is supported by a swimming coach from Waterworld, ensuring all pupils in Year 1 - Year 6 receive high-quality swimming lessons. This is of particular importance to us living next to the sea.
Newquay Sports Partnership (NSP): Goonhavern Primary School is proud to be part of the NSP. Within the NSP, we take part in regular sports tournaments with other Newquay Schools. There is a wide range of sporting events over the year and typically we attend one or two events each fortnight. Tournaments and development sessions include: football, tag-rugby, netball, rounders, basketball, multi-skills, cross-country, surfing, athletics and indoor rowing. In addition, we take part in the Newquay Commonwealth Games and the Newquay Olympic Games which take place every two years. Over 100 pupils from Goonhavern School compete against pupils from other local schools over 5 separate locations.
West Coast Academy: Each term, we offer extra-curricular gymnastics lessons to pupils. These sessions are delivered by West Coast Academy and support the development of balance, coordination and strength.
Southampton Saints: In the 2019/2020 and in the autumn term of the 2020/2021 term we have employed a sports coach though Southampton Football Club. They support teachers to deliver high quality PE lessons.
Aston Villa Football Club: Each year, our Year 6 pupils visit Birmingham as part of a residential trip. We have a stadium tour at Villa Park and then have coaching sessions on Villa’s training pitches.
Local fixtures: Each term, we enjoy competing against Perranporth Primary School in matches. It provides an opportunity to put to use the skills that we've learned in PE lessons. The respect between players in each tournament is exemplary and pupils from both schools demonstrate fantastic sportsmanship.
